FAQ
- Where is The Safe Sippy™ cup made?
- We are an American company, but our cup is manufactured in China near Shanghai. We have done everything to ensure the factory, worker conditions and product is up to our standards. To do so, we visit the factory frequently. The factory is very clean, orderly and humane. They even employ handicapped workers. Most importantly, it is ISO (International Standards of Operation) certified which is very difficult to attain and comes from an outside agency that audits for manufacturing processes and standards. Finally, we have the independent testing lab, STR, test all elements of the cup from the steel and plastic compounds, to FDA and European child safety standards, to the durability of the stainless steel body - just to make sure.
- Is The Safe Sippy™ cup dishwasher safe?
- The cup and all its parts are dishwasher safe. We recommend the top rack only. While the valve does well in the dishwasher, it is easy to lose and we recommend that you hand wash it separately.
- Should I use a special cleaner for The Safe Sippy™ cup?
- If you love hand-washing your cup, please do not use abrasive cleaners, bleaches or cleaners containing chlorine. Mild dish soap or a mixture of vinegar and baking soda work just fine.
- Do I need to remove the sleeve every time I wash the cup?
- No. The sleeve does fine staying on in the dishwasher and with hand washing. We recommend from time to time taking it off to clean so no gunky stuff gets inside.
- I want to take the sleeve off to clean it. What do I do?
- Wet the cup and sleeve, and then gently slide the sleeve off. Clean the inside of the sleeve and the cup and then thoroughly dry them before replacing the sleeve.
- How do I get the sleeve back on now that I have taken it off?
- Turn the sleeve inside out and place the bottom of the sleeve up against the bottom of the stainless steel cup. Push up on the sleeve and the roll it back onto the cup by turning it right side out.
- Water drips from the spout, is something wrong with my cup?
- No. The valve is designed to prevent big spills. A few drips may come out when the cup is turned upside down. Making it completely drip-proof would also make it difficult for a child to drink from. If the dripping seems excessive, please contact us at info@kid-basix.com.
- I lost my Valve and/or Gasket/O-Ring, where can I find a replacement?
- Valve and Gasket replacement packs will be available for purchase through retailers in the Fall of 2008. If you need one now, drop us a line at info@kid-basix.com.
- My Gasket/O-Ring fell out from the cap, how do I get it back in?
- The Gasket/O-Ring is the small rubbery translucent circle that fits inside the cap and seals the cap and cup to prevent leaking. It is removable for cleaning purposes and can be a little tricky to get back in place. There is an actual side to it. If you look at the O-Ring in profile, one side is flat and one side has a slight curve. The curved side is the one that goes in the slot against the cap and it press-fits in, the flat side is what seals the lid to the stainless body. When it is in securely, it should lay flat and stay in position. If you are having trouble with the gasket, feel free to e-mail us at info@kid-basix.com.
- Can I buy a spare cap for The Safe Sippy™ cup?
- Cap replacement packs will be available through retailers in the Fall of 2008. If you are having trouble with yours now, please contact info@kid-basix.com.
- Is The Safe Sippy™ cup insulated?
- No. Our cup is single-walled stainless steel to keep it light (only 5oz empty) and maximize volume (holds 11oz). However, the outer sleeve does provide some insulating protection when you put cold beverages in your cup in summer.
- Can you put hot beverages in The Safe Sippy™ cup?
- Please don't. Our cup is single-walled stainless steel to keep it light (only 5oz empty) and maximize volume (holds 11oz) and metal is a good conductor of hot (and cold). Hot liquids may cause burns. (We know we don't need to tell you this, but our lawyers made us.)
- Can you put carbonated beverages in The Safe Sippy™ cup?
- Please don't. Carbonated liquids have lots of bubbles that may cause your cups to leak. (The ones with sugar can also turn your 2 year old into a screaming banshee.)
- Can I put pulpy juices in The Safe Sippy™ cup?
- We recommend you don't. Pulp can clog your no-spill valve, preventing a child from being able to draw liquid out and may cause spontaneous wailing.
- Can I you put The Safe Sippy™ cup in the microwave?
- No. Metal objects and microwaves don't mix. Bad things happen.
- Is The Safe Sippy™ cup lined with another material?
- No. There is no need; it is pure stainless steel inside and out.
- Does the stainless steel in The Safe Sippy™cup have nickel in it?
- We use food grade stainless steel (300 series or 18/8), which has a maximum of 8% nickel. It is the presence of nickel that results in the formation of the molecular structure that gives this grade some of its key characteristics such as high strength, ductility (ability to be formed) and toughness. It is our understanding that all stainless steel has some nickel in it and it does not pose a health threat. However, there is a small percentage of the population that has a nickel allergy in which case they should stay away from all stainless steel as it may cause a skin rash.
- Does The Safe Sippy™ contain any latex?
- No. The cup and all of its parts contain no latex. The sleeve is made of TPR or Thermoplastic Rubber that does not contain latex.
- What number plastic is used on The Safe Sippy™ cup?
- All plastic parts (cap and handles) are made from #5 plastic or polypropylene that is the safest and most stable of all plastics. All plastic used is tested and/or certified free of BPA and phthalates. Only when a child is actually drinking from the cup does the fluid inside come into contact with the plastic, so what you put in is what you get out.
- Is that a rust spot I see on my cup?
- Stainless steel is naturally highly resistant to corrosion and stains. It's also just a beautiful material (as you can tell we're a bit biased). With frequent use, small spots of rust may show up. This doesn't mean that your cup will shortly turn into a flaking pile of rust or that you child will be ingesting some nasty chemicals (it's actually a viable source of iron). In rare instances larger amounts of rust may occur, in that case please contact us at info@kid-basix.com.
- My Safe Sippy™ cup has a dent, does it still work?
- The Safe Sippy is made of stainless steel. If dropped, small dents may occur. Occasional dents are an excellent sign that you are getting plenty of use from your cup. They will not affect your cup's performance.
